The Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Center Presents 'Breaking through the Stigma: The Portrayal of Mental Illness in the Media'

ATLANTA, GA....Today, journalists play an increasingly important role in shaping public understanding and debate about health care issues. Does the media unfairly influence the public perception of the mentally ill? How can we erase the stigma attached to mental illness? Rosalynn Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà and The Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Center will host a panel of experts to address these issues on Thursday, May 13, from 7:30-9 p.m.

In addition to Mrs. Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ, speakers will include: John Gates, Ph.D., former director of the Center's Mental Health Program; Otto Wahl, Ph.D., psychology professor, George Mason University, and advisory board member Rosalynn Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism; Dan Rutz, senior medical correspondent, CNN; and Andrew Skolnick, former associate news editor, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and 1997-98 Rosalynn Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Fellow for Mental Health Journalism.

This discussion is the fourth and final installation in the 1998-99 "Conversations at the Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Center" speakers series. The Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Center will announce its 1999-2000 series schedule in August, with the first discussion planned for mid-September.

Following the May 13 event, more than 350 consumers, providers, and advocates will attend the "Rosalynn Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Georgia Mental Health Forum" at The Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Center, Friday, May 14, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The topic, "Recovery: A Journey for Life," will highlight effective treatment programs.
